Abstract Landscape Painting
Registration open July 27th
Cadence: Mondays 10am-1pm EST, November 7 - December 5
Description: This 5-session Abstract Landscape Painting workshop will explore the fundamentals of abstraction through the lens of landscape painting. We will use reference photos to remind us of powerful moments in the landscape, and channel this energy into color and mark.
Each class will begin with exercises that explore the intersection of abstract language and landscape painting through various synchronous drawing and painting exercises. Following that is open studio time where you can further investigate the day’s process in a more involved artwork. The combination of guided exercises and open studio sessions provides the structure to introduce new methodologies of creation and the freedom to explore, experiment and play. Amanda is ready to help you make more informed decisions on the canvas, trust your instinct, and most importantly, to ensure you make the work that you want to make.
This workshop is designed for all level artists. Attendees can expect to complete several experimental drawings, develop preparatory paintings, create a small series of color study paintings, complete 2 collage-based works, and complete 3 abstract landscape paintings during the class. There is a cap of 10 students for this class.
Workshop Structure: Every class session carefully balances synchronous exercises, open studio time and critique. Please read the descriptions below for more details on how class time is used.
Synchronous Exercise: Each day will bring a different focus, for example, one day will focus on color, another on mark making. Amanda will give clear guidance and complete all exercises with the artist cohort. A camera will be situated with a bird’s eye view over Amanda’s work space, viewers will have a clear view of every demonstration.
Open Studio: Participants will work independently in their studios during this time. Amanda will provide guidance for the day’s goals. All artists will have 2-3 10-minute 1:1 sessions with Amanda during this time in a private Zoom breakout room to discuss their personal needs, concerns, and to receive feedback.
Reflection & Critique: The last half hour of each day will be spent reflecting, discussing and sharing work. Reflection is vital in any studio practice. Take a moment to breathe. We all learn from each other in workshop settings, and therefore it is important to show, see, and learn from one another’s work.
