REGISTRATION OPENS 9/1 AT 9AM EST.
Cadence: November 1-5; 9am-2pm EST daily
Max Class size: 8 artists
Class Description:
How do you experience nature? Some climb the biggest mountain they can find, others comb the beach or cultivate colorful gardens in their backyard. Abstract landscape painting allows us to relive these moments in nature and capture those fleeting moments of exhilaration, nostalgia and serenity through color and mark.
This 5-day Abstract Landscape Painting workshop will provide access to the vocabulary and fundamentals of abstraction through the lens of landscape painting. We will use reference photos to remind us of powerful moments in the landscape, and channel this energy into color and mark. Each morning we will explore the intersection of abstract language and landscape painting through exercises in drawing, acrylic paint, and collage. These methodologies will be further explored on larger, more involved canvases each afternoon. The combination of guided exercises and open studio sessions provides the structure to introduce new methodologies of creation, and the freedom to explore, experiment and play. Amanda is ready to help you make more informed decisions on the canvas, trust your instinct, and most importantly, to ensure you make the work that you want to make.
This workshop is meant to provide access to the vocabulary of abstraction for all-level artists.Attendees can expect to complete several experimental drawings, collages and acrylic paintings on 9x12 paper, develop preparatory work for larger canvases, build and mix unconventional palettes, and execute 3-4 larger acrylic paintings during this workshop.
Workshop Structure
9am-11am: Synchronous Morning Exercise
Each morning, the class will meet on Zoom for roughly 2 hours and work on a morning exercise synchronously. Each day will bring a different focus, for example, one day will focus on color, another on mark making. Amanda will give clear guidance and complete all exercises with the artist cohort. A camera will be situated with a bird’s eye view over Amanda’s work space, viewers will have a clear view of every demonstration.
11-2pm: Open Studio
Participants will work independently in their studios during this time. Amanda will provide guidance for the day’s goals. Each morning exercise will be further explored in the afternoon open studio time. All artists will have 1:1 time with Amanda during this time in a private Zoom breakout room to discuss their personal needs, concerns, and to receive feedback. All artists must attend their 1:1 session during their scheduled time, otherwise it is optional to be on Zoom. Breaks are encouraged during this time.
2-2:30pm: Daily Recap and Reflect
The last 30 minutes of each day will be spent reflecting, discussing and sharing work. Reflection is vital in an intensive-style workshop. Take a moment to breath. This time we will share work from the day and engage in an informal critique. We all learn from each other in workshop settings, and therefore it is important to show, see, and learn from one another’s work.
